Jeremy Scheck is very much an East Coast person. The 23-year-old cookbook author and TikTok star grew up in D.C. before moving to New York for college. “I've lived my entire life on the East Coast,” he says. “It’s who I am.”
His TikTok account @scheckeats has amassed well over 2 million followers with his viral recipes and culinary hot takes (out: hot honey; in: maple garlic). But while on tour in L.A. for his newly released cookbook, Cooking Smarter, Scheck decided to do as the West Coasters do and make a trip to Erewhon Market. “I had never been to L.A. before, and I was hanging out with one of my good friends who was born and raised there, so I wanted to go to all the places that she liked,” he recalls. He’d heard about the luxury grocery store with the cult following, and as a general grocery store aficionado with a life-long passion for smoothies, he felt obliged to visit Erewhon’s famous in-store smoothie counter.
“I ordered two smoothies, one for my friend and one for me,” he says. “They gave it to me in this little carrying thing, and as I was leaving… it just broke.”
The resulting TikTok — a 2-slide narrative starting with beaming smiles and ending with two puddles of Hailey Bieber’s Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie (yes, that’s actually what it is called, which I couldn’t really explain to you because I am also an East Coast person) — went viral. “I’m going back to New York,” the caption concludes.
Viewer comments, often accompanied by a laugh-cry emoji, centered around the fact that Scheck had dropped “a mortgage worth of smoothie.” (Erewhon is not known for affordability.) So as a lighthearted, coast-bridging response, Scheck decided to create his take on the Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie — which can be enjoyed just about anywhere with blender access and won’t set you back $18 plus tax.
“My mom had a very fancy blender when I was growing up, and we consistently used it every single day for 10 years to make smoothies,” Scheck says. “There are certain foods that I don't really think of as something that I go out for, and a smoothie is one of those things. Like chocolate chip cookies. I'm always seeing people naming the best chocolate chip cookie in New York City, and it's like, no, the best ones are the ones that you make at your home. That’s how I feel about smoothies as well.”
And so, without further ado, we present to you: Scheck’s Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie.
Strawberry sauce
½ cup frozen strawberries
½ cup water
¼ cup sugar
Coconut cream
2 Tbsp coconut cream
1 Tbsp powdered sugar
Smoothie base
1 cup frozen strawberries
½ frozen banana
1 Tbsp maple syrup
1 cup almond milk
1 scoop collagen or protein powder (optional)
Combine all ingredients for each component (strawberry sauce, coconut cream, smoothie base) separately in a blender on high until each is smooth, with no big chunks. Then pour layer by layer into a large glass: first the strawberry sauce, then the coconut cream, then the smoothie. Enjoy!
