If there’s one dish people are passionate about in this city, it’s pizza. Everyone has their favourite, and convincing them otherwise is an ill-fought battle. What this means for you, though, is that it’s very hard to go wrong, whichever slice you choose. I love the artistry of Toronto’s pizza makers, the combinations of flavours and textures they dream up, the varieties of crunchy crust and the blisters made from time in the oven. Dig into this list of Toronto’s best pizza places to find your new favourite near you.
8Mile Detroit Style Pizza
A tiny spot just a couple blocks from Yorkville, 8Mile serves up Detroit-style square pizzas of pillowy dough surrounded by crispy, cheesy edges. The dough is proofed overnight in square steel pans, just as it is in Motor City, to create a cushiony canvas for toppings that’s cut into four slices. Detroit Red Top Pie — pepperoni, garlic oil, parmigiana and the restaurant’s signature red sauce — is the classic and a great option if it’s your first time. If you’re craving variety, opt for the Half & Half to try two types of pizza on one (delicious) base.
ACUTE PIZZERIA
If you like a thick, fluffy crust, you’ll love biting into a slice from this spot in Brockton Village. The base for all their pizzas is a homemade sourdough crust, and it’s become a calling card for them, with folks raving about the crispy crunch. The menu is tight, with 11 pies on offer, six of which are available as vegetarian or vegan, including the traditional Margherita and the Bianca, topped with roasted mushroom, caramelized onion, pickled jalapeño, and pineapple. They also serve up chicken wings, fries, and cheese-stuffed chicken balls, making this a one-stop shop for game night.
Bello Pizza
Tucked at the back of Halcyon Cafe in Bloor West Village, Bello Pizza turns out Neapolitan-style pies in an oven imported from Italy. A new pizza drops every week to complement the regular menu, which includes classic New York Cheese; Tropical Tony, an elevated take on a Hawaiian with compressed pineapples and pickled jalapeños; and Spicy Goat, a vegetarian option (believe it or not) with a blend of goat cheeses and hot honey. Bread lovers (aka all of us) should add the fresh focaccia to their order. This is a Most Loved Restaurant on DoorDash which means it is one of the top-rated and most reliable restaurants on DoorDash.
Big 3 Detroit Style Pizza
In the Church-Wellesley Village, Big 3 bakes deep-dish pizza with super crispy edges. The sweet and salty Sweetie Pie includes the best of both worlds: bacon, spicy soppressata, fresh pineapple, and a honey drizzle. The Diablo, a spicy mix of pepperoni, ‘nduja, Calabrian peppers, and fresh jalapeños, is great for heat lovers. Dessert is Detroit-pizza inspired, too: cinnamon Squares top pizza dough with house-made cream cheese icing, cinnamon and sugar.
Blondies
Founded in Leslieville, Blondies now has seven locations around the city, baking New York-style pizza and serving them in unapologetically bright pink boxes. The menu is tight, with 12 pizzas classified as either red (tomato sauce) or white (alfredo sauce). Either way you go, you’ll find many pies are meat-heavy, dotted with the likes of Venetian pepperoni, Calabrese salami, Italian sausage, and chorizo. Veggie lovers would be advised to build their own pie. Add a sweet note with the Hot & Honey dip. Salads and chicken wings are also available as sides — choose between the subtle Salt and Pepper wings, rich Garlic Parm, or the classics, Buffalo or BBQ. This is a Most Loved Restaurant on DoorDash.
Burattino Brick Oven Pizza Inc
There’s creativity on Burratino’s menu that you won’t find elsewhere. Case in point: the pepperoni at this Junction restaurant isn’t your basic pie, it’s a 120 Pepperoni Pizza, with 120 slices covering the mozzarella and marinara sauce. Instead of a plain cheese pizza, try their Cheese Lava Pie, a combination of mozzarella, queso fresco, feta, and provolone on pillowy dough. They also serve pizzas themed by regions, such as the Croatian Pizza, which includes beef prosciutto, mushrooms, roasted red peppers, and feta.
Capi's Gourmet Pizza & Restaurant
A local favourite operating in central Etobicoke since 1962, Capi’s came under new ownership in 2020 and has a refreshed focus on what it does best: made-from-scratch pizzas. It’s all about the details here; olives are pitted and sliced by hand, red peppers are freshly roasted and peeled, 'nduja sausage is made in house. Along with a comprehensive pizza menu, Capi’s offers a selection of refreshing salads and toasty panini, like the vegetarian Mortadella, which comes with fior di latte, lettuce, tomato, and onion, or Muffuletta, a hearty combination of soppressata, mortadella, salad, roasted red peppers, and provolone. This is a Most Loved Restaurant on DoorDash.
Donatelli's Pizzeria
This is the best restaurant for classic thin-crust pizza in the west end. They bake up the expected pies — pepperoni, veggie, Hawaiian (which they call Maui Maui) — as well as some traditional Italian combinations, like the rich Cacio e Pepe (mozza, pecorino romano, black pepper). Where they really have fun is with their specials, which change every week. Watch for The Stromboli (half panzerotti, half cheese pizza) and the Double Header (half cheesy garlic fingers, half pepperoni pizza). This is a Most Loved Restaurant on DoorDash.
Eataly
I love wandering around Eataly, browsing the imported delicacies and drooling (covertly) over their burrata, prosciutto, and freshly baked focaccia. That same bread expertise informs their pizza making. Choose from Romana or Neapolitan-style pizza. The square Romana slices are covered generously with fresh toppings; the Tricolore, a nod to the colours of the Italian flag, features prosciutto, stracciatella, cherry tomatoes, and arugula. The Neapolitan pizza menu is the result of a collab with Rossopomodoro, the Italian pizza chain founded in Naples that has locations throughout Europe and the United States. This is a Most Loved Restaurant on DoorDash.
Ferro Bar & Cafe
The team behind Ferro offer a fulsome menu of Southern Italian specialities, including pasta, risotto, and panini. Pizzas are wood-fired, and options are diverse. While they offer a traditional Margherita, the Burrata Margherita is topped with fresh whole burrata that’s dusted with parmesan and drizzled with olive oil. There’s also the option to make your own Pizza Bianco (white sauce) or Pesto Pizza.
General Assembly
General Assembly has perfected the personal-sized thin-crust pizza. Using naturally leavened sourdough baked in a wood-fire oven, GA pies have just the right amount of crunch, and come with generous toppings. The Loving Cup, for instance, is covered edge to edge with tiny pepperoni slices curled to cup-form (aka greasy goodness) during the baking process. Get your greens on the side with a simple kale or Caesar salad.
North of Brooklyn
With seven locations across the city, North of Brooklyn is a fan favourite for delivery near you. The New York-inspired pizzeria offers medium and large thin-crust pies made with flour from a historic water-powered commercial flour mill outside London, Ontario. The result is generous, floppy slices — the kind best enjoyed with a paper plate to catch the crumbs. Elevated topping combos include the Truffle Shuffle, with truffle cream, cremini mushrooms, caramelized onions, and lemon zest. Request a mini jar of hot honey to add a sweet bite to whichever pie you order. This is a Most Loved Restaurant on DoorDash.
Oretta
With restaurants on King West and at Yonge and Eglinton, Oretta’s menu is a chic take on casual Italian dishes. Their pizzas are inspired by different cities around Italy. The Piemonte is a mix of fior di latte and fontina cheeses with roasted mushrooms, truffle crema, and garlic purée, while La Parma comes with fior di latte, arugula, prosciutto, and parmigiano. The options for dessert are classic Italian, and there are no wrong choices: tiramisu, cannoli, gelato, and the rich Bacio di Pantelleria, hazelnut mousse and gianduia chocolate sandwiched between a crisp pastry.
Pizzeria da Mario
The chef’s 20 years’ experience making pies in northern Italy’s pizzerias brings authenticity to the kitchen at this Kensington Market spot. You’ll find Italian classics on offer, like the vegetable-covered Ortolana, which translates to greengrocer, and savoury Siciliana, which features salty capers, anchovies, and olives. The calzones, which are delicious, come topped with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle of Grana Padano.
Pizzeria Defina
This team at this Roncesvalles pizzeria is so serious about its craft that it has defended its pie-making expertise twice at the World Pizza Expo in Las Vegas. One of their best pizzas is named for the experience — the 2013 Las Vegas Expo Winner for "Best Traditional Pizza," buffalo mozzarella, ‘nduja, mushrooms, tarragon, and basil — and it’s a great place to start if you’re new to Defina. Their love of cooking in a wood-fired oven has influenced the rest of the menu; add the crispy Brussels sprouts as a side, as the dish is just as popular as their pizzas.
Salt and Tobacco
This Cabbagetown pizzeria specializes in round Roman-style pies with a crispy thin crust. Ingredients are sourced locally, and while substitutions are a no-go, you can add on flavour accents like arugula, anchovies, spicy peppers, or chili oil. There’s no gatekeeping at Salt and Tobacco: You can order frozen pies to cook at home when the craving hits, as well as all the ingredients you need to make your own pie — dough, sauce, cheese, and sliced pepperoni. This is a Most Loved Restaurant on DoorDash.
SlowSouth Pizza
SlowSouth co-owners Enrica Zamboni and Giuseppe Bruzzese harness their roots in Calabria and South Tyrol’s Alto Adige to inform their style of baking. The dough is made by hand and proofed for up to 72 hours, resulting in a beautiful balance of chewy and crispy. Toppings are either sourced locally or imported from Italy, and the menu incorporates them in creative combinations, like Pistachio (a combo of classic Calabrian flavours, fior di latte, pesto sauce, mortadella and pistachio crumbles) and Speck and Noci (speck (South Tyrol’s quintessential salami), radicchio, gorgonzola, walnuts, honey). Also available are classic fritti; think arancini and mozz sticks. This is a Most Loved Restaurant on DoorDash.
Sud Forno
Think of Sud Forno as Terroni’s little brother. I think of its Temperance location, just a couple blocks from the Financial District, as a slice of calm in one of the busiest parts of town. Baking is the speciality here. A breadmaker came over from Italy to teach the team the fundamentals of Italian artisanal breads, and the kitchen has since expanded into pastries, baked goods, and pizza stirata — pizza on stretched focaccia dough. Order by the square slice or in a group of four or eight.
Terroni
This is a Toronto institution as famous for its firm no-substitutions rule as it is for the pizza. With locations on Queen West, Summerhill and Downtown East, Terroni is my go-to when I’m craving Southern Italian food — something they’ve been doing right for more than 30 years. Ingredients are imported from Italy, as are the cooking traditions for their menu of salads, pasta, and Neapolitan-style pies. If you like a bit of spice, opt for San Giorgio, which comes with generous slices of spicy Calabrese salame, or Smendozzate, covered in housemade spicy sausage. Order a bottle of red, perhaps the 2022 Lunachiena Salento Rosso, to sip along with your slice.
The Fourth Man in the Fire Pizzeria
Bless Fourth Man for being one of the few pizzerias that lets solo diners order just a slice or two for delivery near you. The founder is the same man who launched the beloved chain The Burger’s Priest, and his expertise for selecting choice ingredients to build a menu around has found success here, too. Italian sausage is made in-house to complement essential base ingredients of Caputo flour and San Marzano tomatoes. Build your own pizza (there’s a gluten-free option), or pick from the menu that includes Mushroom and Garlic as well as Barbecue Chicken. Don’t forget dessert! This Toronto pizza shop is also home to Harry and Heels, which specializes in soft, sweet, and fluffy doughnuts.
Queen Margherita Pizza
One of the original spots in the city to find crispy Neapolitan-style pizza baked with an open flame in a wood-fired oven, QMP is now serving up pies from its Baby Point location in the west end. Every pizza on their menu is made with Tipo “00” flour and sauce made with Italian tomatoes. Classic topping combos are on offer with Rosso and Bianco (red and white) options. If you can’t choose, try the Mezze Luna, which translates to half moon and resembles one — basil and fior di latte on half, while the other is folded over and filled with whipped ricotta. Pair with a salad, perhaps Caprese or pear, fennel, and blood orange.
New customers get $0 delivery fee on their first order. First-time users only, on orders that meet minimum subtotal. Other fees (incl. service & small order fees), taxes & gratuity apply. Terms apply.
